With online chat rooms the social norm and computer aficionados competing for who has the biggest hard drive and the fastest processor, there are many users who eagerly choose to leave reality behind. Bob Higgins, Hugh Masterson and Joe Yates are three such individuals. These average forty-something American males with mortgages, kids, and dying marriages are men for whom the computer has become a religion. Bob and Hugh work in California's affluent Silicon Valley, whereas the working-class Joe is a plumber from Oakland. However, what will bring these men together is their love of the computer and their increasing fascination with on-line chat rooms a fascination that leads to an increasing alienation from their families. For in cyberspace each man can be anything he wants. And what he wants is to be the complete opposite of what he is. While Hugh gets his jollies masquerading as a woman in lesbian chat rooms and the nondescript Joe seeks out women for online sex in the guise of a cyber John Wayne, Bob plays a more dangerous game a game that attracts a very loyal chat partner. For the first time in his life, Bob feels as if he is really in control and it is all thanks to 'Kitty, ' the female persona he has invented for himself. He quickly becomes addicted to these online interchanges, even going so far as to make a date with a man who fancies himself in love with the beautiful young bombshell named Kitty a man who wants her to leave her husband for him. One broken date leads to a second, not to mention a lot of subterfuge from Kitty's creator, whose game soon begins to lose its fun. A loner whose idol is Bill Gates, Kitty's cyber-lover, is extremely comfortable with computers more comfortable than he is with people. A young man of limited experience with the opposite sex, he knows that Kitty is the only woman in the world for him. Whenever he works on Sundays at his tech job, he likes to treat himself to a latte at Starbucks. It is the same Starbucks where Bob, Hugh and Joe meet every Sunday morning to swap cyber-adventures. On one of these mornings he happens to overhear a snatch of conversation among the three a conversation involving somebody named Kitty. Suddenly he realizes that the one obstacle preventing his happiness is right here. For who else can the man he has been eavesdropping on be but the husband of the woman he loves? He now knows what he must do so that he and Kitty can be together. And he will do anything to get her.
